Marilyn McNamara is New Bar President | Marilyn Billings McNamara, of the Upton & Hatfield law firm, took office as NHBA President at the conclusion of the 2010 Annual Meeting at the Omni Mount Washington Hotel on June 26.
Outgoing President Jim Tenn presented awards to Chief Justice Broderick, NH Public Defender chief Christopher Keating and John B. Andrews of Concord.

Save the Date – Battle of the Bands! – 10/17 | Mark your calendars for Sunday, October 17, because the battle is brewing. Starting at 2:00 p.m. at Murphy’s Taproom in Manchester, the NHBA New Lawyers Committee will be putting on a Battle of the Bands, with musical acts featuring NH Bar members.

| The NH Attorney General has renewed a warning to attorneys and others to check carefully before entering financial dealings with clients solely through e-mail. It reports on two recent incidents involving purported collection cases, one of which resulted in a $240,000 loss to an unidentified NH law firm. AG's alert - 7/15.
Recently, the NH Attorney Discipline Office reiterated a warning on similar scams.

| In a letter to NH citizens released on 4th of July weekend, Chief Justice Broderick describes the 'tough choices' the court system is making to get through a budget that was cut by an additional $1 million in the last weeks of the legislative session. ♦ 1/3 of all jury sessions will be eliminated. Due to the precedence of criminal jury matters, civil jury trials in the coming year will be "rare." Nashua Telegraph - 7/15 ♦ Senior status judges will, with almost no exceptions, not be used to fill in for judicial vacancies. ♦ District court sessions will be down by about 20 percent statewide.

In related news, "no" votes by Amherst and Mont Vernon appear to have doomed efforts to avert the closure of Milford District Court, which will be relocated to the Merrimack District Court building. Court plans July 30 move, Nashua Telegraph.

Board of Governors to Seek S.A.F.E Act Remedies | At a rescheduled meeting on Thursday, June 17, the NHBA Board of Governors voted to pursue legislative and administrative remedies to difficulties posed by the NH Banking Department's interpretation and enforcement of RSA 397-A, the NH version of the S.A.F.E. mortgage licensing act.
The Board voted to support corrective legislation at the state level; seek clarity from the Banking Department on the current attorney exemption; and encourage federal lawmakers to support regulations allowing a categorical attorney exemption. The Board did not vote to intervene in specific enforcement actions.
