From LPM Practice Management Advisors Task Force:The terrible devastation that hurricane Katrina has visited upon the Gulf Coast has certainly been a sobering experience for all of us. Along with the impact on other residents, many lawyers have no doubt lost their entire practices. An e-mail circulating notes that approximately one-third of Louisiana's lawyers are in New Orleans. The ABA and, in particular, the ABA Law Practice Management Section is mobilizing to help those impacted lawyers.
But as our hearts and prayers go out to those impacted by this devastation, It is also good to remember that disasters come in all shapes and sizes, from the heart attack of the solo practitioner to wide-spread destruction such as we have just seen. We all should give some thought to how we can take steps to reduce the impact on our law practices and our client's matters in the event of experiencing our own disaster of whatever scope. Solo practitioners in particular should ask themselves the question "What should happen with my pending matters if I am temporarily disabled or gone tomorrow?" and then take steps to commit the answers to writing
