NHBA Listserves - Whitelisting List Messages
Many Web mail services such as Hotmail, Yahoo and Gmail, and e-mail applications such as Outlook, take measures to automatically filter bulk e-mails which sometimes incorrectly block legitimate mailings, such as the list messages. It may be helpful to some of you to take steps to “whitelist” the list e-mail address(es) that you want to receive e-mail from. A whitelist, or safe senders list, is a list of e-mail senders you want to receive mail from. By adding an address to your whitelist or safe senders list, you are telling the e-mail system not to filter e-mail from that address.
The instructions below may be helpful to some users. It is recommended that you take these steps even if you are currently receiving the postings, as a way to prevent future problems.
Instructions: How to whitelist the NHBA list messages
If you use a Web mail system or e-mail application not listed at the links below, the instructions for whitelisting will depend on the specific e-mail program you are using. If you access the help files, instruction manual or customer support, there should be instructions on how to do this.
In many cases, just by adding the list address (for example: nhbar-fam@lists.nhbar.org) to your address book, safe list, white list or contact list will be sufficient.
If the list messages are not getting to your Inbox, then check your spam or Junk mail folder. If you find the list messages there, then you will need to find a way to inform your mail application that it is not spam. Most likely, all you will need to do is select the list message and click on Not Spam or Not Junk button, if available. For more information about your mail application, please visit the Help section of your mail application.

Hotmail
New Subscribers
Try the following steps to add the list to the safe senders list, so that you can receive messages without Hotmail blocking them:
- Sign in to the Windows Live Hotmail website with your Windows Live ID.
- On the Action bar, click Options (in the upper right corner of the screen), and then click More options.
- Under Junk e-mail, click Safe and blocked senders.
- Do one of the following
- To add the sender or domain to your list of Safe senders, click Safe senders.
- To add the sender or domain to your list of Blocked senders, click Blocked senders.
- Enter an e-mail address (such as nhbar-fam@lists.nhbar.org) or a domain (such as @lists.nhbar.org – if you belong to more than one NHBA discussion list), and then click Add to List.
Existing Subscribers
If you are already a subscriber but the list messages aren’t getting through, make sure the mailing is not being sent to your Junk E-mail folder. If the list messages are there, open a mailing and click the Not Junk button. Next, check to see if the mailing’s e-mail address is in your Blocked Senders list. If you see the list address on this list, select it and click the Remove button. Finally, if you have not done so, add the list address into your Safe List as outlined in the New Subscribers info above.
Yahoo!
To ensure that the NHBA Listserve messages are delivered to your Yahoo Inbox (not the Bulk Mail folder), you can instruct Yahoo to filter it to your Inbox. Here's how:
- Open your Yahoo mailbox
- Click Mail Options
- Click Filters
- Next, click Add Filter
- In the top row, labeled From header, make sure contains is selected in the pull down menu.
- Click in the text box next to the pull-down menu, then enter the Listserve address (such as “nhbar-newlawyers@lists.nhbar.org").
- At the bottom, where it says Move the message to:, select Inbox from the pull down menu.
- Click the Add Filter button again.
GMail
To make sure Gmail never filters as spam mail from the NHBA Listserves:
- Follow the Settings link in Gmail.
- Go to Filters.
- Click Create a new filter.
- Type the desired e-mail address under From:
- To whitelist an entire domain (all mail from the address ending in "lists.nhbar.org", for example), type the just the domain name or the domain name preceded by '@'. To whitelist "lists.nhbar.org", for instance, type "@lists.nhbar.org" (not including the quotation marks).
- You do not have to create a separate filter for each address. Separate addresses with '|' in the From: field instead. To whitelist both "jenny@example.com" and "jelani@example.com", enter "jenny@example.com|jelani@example.com", for example.
- Click Next Step ››.
- You can click Test Search before, of course, to make sure you did not mistype.
- Make sure Never send it to Spam is checked.
- Click Create Filter.
