Constitutional Law at Issue in Jan. 11 Competition
John Stark Regional, Milford, Nashua North High School Vie in We the People Event

High school students from John Stark Regional, Milford, and Nashua North high schools will be competing on Friday, Jan. 11, 2008, for the state championship of the "We the People...The Citizen and the Constitution" competition. This year marks the 21st year that the competition, sponsored by the New Hampshire Bar Association, has been held in New Hampshire.

The state winner will be eligible to compete in the national We the People championship, held in Washington, D.C., on May 3 to 5, 2008.

The three-team field of finalists was chosen following a preliminary round of competition held Friday, Dec. 14 at the Legislative Office Building in Concord. John Stark, with two teams entered, competed against Gorham Middle High School, and Milford and Nashua High North.

The finals will be a daylong event at the Legislative Office Building, with competition starting at 9 a.m. and concluding by 4 p.m. with the naming of the state champion.

In past years, the NH team has toured various sites in the nation’s capital and on several occasions, the teams have had a private audience with Justice David Souter.

“We the People…The Citizen and the Constitution” requires every student in a class to make a short oral presentation and answer questions regarding the philosophy, principles and application of the US Constitution. The students are questioned and evaluated by panels of judges drawn from the law profession and courts, government and education.

In addition to the on-site competition, dozens of schools each year participate by using the curriculum in their classes, magnifying the impact of the program beyond the students who compete live in the regional and final competitions in NH. In 2006, more than 51 sets were distributed to schools throughout New Hampshire.

Since the inception of the We the People program in 1987, more than 28 million students and 90,000 educators have participated in this innovative course of study. Members of Congress, as well as professional and business leaders, bar associations and other community and educational organizations support the program across the nation.

The competition is supported, in part, by grants from the Center for Civic Education and the New Hampshire Bar Foundation's IOLTA Program.
