Timothy Vaughan Confirmed to Superior Court
LITTLETON ATTORNEY Timothy J. Vaughan was recently confirmed by Governor Jeanne Shaheen and the Executive Council as an associate justice of the New Hampshire Superior Court. During the same session of the Executive Council, Peter H. Bornstein, a special justice of Berlin District Court and presiding justice of Gorham District Court, was also confirmed as justice of Lancaster District Court.
Vaughan, 56, was most recently a partner in the Littleton law firm of Samaha, Vaughan & Shepatin (now Samaha & Russell). There he focused his general practice in the areas of workers' compensation, personal injury litigation, banking, real estate and business law. He was with the firm from 1979 until his appointment to the Superior Court bench. Prior to that, Vaughan was an associate at Decato & Cirone in Lebanon for one year and at the Law Office of Luigi Castello in Woodsville for three years.
Vaughan will replace recently retired Superior Court Justice Philip Hollman. When Bar News spoke to Vaughan, he had just been sworn in by Gov. Shaheen, was in the midst of wrapping up his law practice and was slated to begin the judicial training process Jan. 22. He said he was "looking forward to the challenge of being a Superior Court judge."
"It'll give me the opportunity to view the courtroom from the other side of the bench, having represented clients for so many years," said Vaughan.
"I look forward to the intellectual challenges and the opportunity to use those skills I've acquired as a practicing attorney - patience, common sense and listening skills, as well as an ability to apply legal reasoning skills to the facts of a given case to bring forward a just and reasonable result."
Vaughan earned his undergraduate degree from St. Anselm College and his law degree from Suffolk University Law School in 1973. He was admitted to the NH Bar in 1974. He is also a member of the Massachusetts Bar Association (since 1973), Grafton County Bar Association, Association of Trial Lawyers of America and the NH Trial Lawyers Association. He is licensed to practice before the US District Court - District of NH and the First Circuit Court of Appeals.
Vaughan was previously a member of the New Hampshire Legal Assistance Board of Directors and the NH Bar Association's Task Force on Women in the Profession. He is a current member of the Frank Rowe Kenison Inn of Court. He is also a member of a variety of civic organizations in the Littleton area.
Berlin attorney Peter H. Bornstein, who was appointed a part-time judge for the Berlin and Gorham district courts less than a year ago, has been appointed justice of Lancaster District Court, as well. Bornstein, 48, will serve in all three part-time judgeships while continuing his law practice as a partner in the Berlin firm Bergeron, Hanson & Bornstein, where he has practiced for the past 21 years. A graduate of Boston University, Bornstein earned his law degree from William & Mary College in 1980 and spent the following year clerking for then NH Supreme Court Chief Justice William A. Grimes. In 1981, he joined the law firm Bergeron & Hanson, the predecessor to his current firm. He focuses his practice on civil litigation, probate, real estate, municipal and banking work.
