United Ways Support Legal Services in NH
BOTH NH LEGAL Assistance (NHLA) and the NHBA Pro Bono Referral Program receive significant support from the United Way campaigns throughout New Hampshire.
NH Legal Assistance is a member of all nine United Ways in New Hampshire, while the Pro Bono program is a member agency of five United Ways.
According to Ginny Martin, NHBA associate executive director for legal services, the Pro Bono program last year received grants from four United Ways, which represented approximately 13 percent of its budget. This year, Pro Bono became eligible to apply for funding from the Merrimack County United Way. Pro Bono currently receives funding from the Heritage United Way (formerly the Greater Manchester United Way), and the United Ways of the Greater Seacoast, Upper Valley and Monadnock region.
"The support of the United Way campaigns means more to us than the dollars they represent," said Martin. "Their support indicates recognition beyond the legal community of the need for civil legal services for low-income people. United Way support also shows that access to justice is a societal need akin to other community needs."
"We encourage Bar members to support their local United Way through their contributions as well as through volunteering," Martin said. "The United Way helps our communities in many ways, and - directly and indirectly - supports the public service efforts of members of the Bar."
