In Memoriam - Sargent, Jones
Samuel L. Sargent
Attorney Samuel L. Sargent, 81, of Gilford, died Jan. 10, 2003, at the Lakes Region General Hospital, Laconia.
Sargent was born Jan. 12, 1921, in Laconia, the son of Bartholomew E. and Dorilda M. (Pettigrew) Sargent. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He then went on to earn his law degree from Boston University in 1952 and was admitted to the NH Bar the same year.
Sargent was an attorney in the Lakes Region for 37 years, until his retirement in 1989. He was a member of the Planning Board of Zoning for the Town of Gilford; a longtime member of the board of directors of the Bayside Cemetery Association; a member of the AWA Radio Wireless Club of New York; and a certified Scuba diver. He was also an amateur radio operator and a member of the Dull Man’s Club.
Survivors include his wife, Helen (Doucet) Sargent of Gilford; one son, Robert L. Sargent of Chelmsford, Mass.; three daughters, Simone Maglio and Louise Sargent, both of Gilford, and Denise Sargent of Lake Worth, Fla.; and five grandchildren, Stephanie Maglio, Eric Maglio, Elizabeth Maglio, all of Gilford, Gregory Sargent and Nicholas Sargent, both of Chelmsford, Mass.; and two cousins Viana LaPierre and Gary LaPierre, both of Gilford. He was predeceased by his half-sister, Dorothy E. Mitchell, who died in 1992.

Robert A. Jones
Robert A. Jones, 87, of Lebanon, a 50-plus-year member of the NH Bar Association, former Grafton County attorney and former probate judge, died March 21, 2003, in Del Ray Beach, Fla.
Jones was born in Lebanon on Sept. 13, 1915, the son of Fred A. and Mary (Bennett) Jones. He was a graduate of Lebanon High School (1933), Dartmouth College (1938) and received his law degree from Boston University in 1941. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and was discharged as a lieutenant senior grade.
Jones was admitted to the NH Bar in 1941 and practiced law in Lebanon until going on honorary inactive status in 1995. During the course of his lengthy career, he served as Grafton County attorney from 1947 to 1953, Grafton County commissioner from 1953 to 1957 and Grafton County judge of probate from 1958 to 1982. He was a member of the Grafton County Bar Association and its president in 1952. He also served as legal counsel for the town of Lebanon and for the Lebanon School District.
In addition to his career accomplishments, Jones was involved in numerous civic and social organizations, including the Lebanon Planning Board, Fire Precinct, Improvement Society, Industrial Development Association and Republican Committee; the NH County Officers Association; and the Carter Country Club. He was also co-founder of the Lebanon Alumni Association.
He enjoyed playing cribbage and golf and was a loyal Dartmouth football fan and alumnus.
Jones married Virginia Elliott on Feb. 12, 1949. Mrs. Jones predeceased her husband in 1988. He was also predeceased by a son, Douglas A. Jones, in 1992.
He is survived by two children, Deborah J. Cooper of Lebanon, a NH Bar member practicing with the Lebanon law firm Daschbach, Cooper, Hotchkiss & Csatari, and David A. Jones of Marlborough, Conn.; four grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
