In Memoriam - William H. Barry, Jr.
FORMER U.S. DISTRICT Court Magistrate Judge William H. Barry, Jr. died May 16 at Southern New Hampshire Medical Center in Nashua. He was 73.
Born in Nashua on Feb. 3, 1920, he was the son of William H. and Mabel (Monica) Barry. He lived in Nashua his entire life.
Barry was educated in Nashua, graduating from Nashua Senior High School in 1947. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, having served in Korea, assigned to the SP 3rd Infantry Division from October 1951 to June 1952. Among his decorations were the Purple Heart, The Korean Service Medal with two bronze stars and the United Nations Service Medal.
Following in his father’s footsteps, Barry then went on to graduate from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass., in 1956 with a degree in sociology. He earned his law degree from Suffolk Law School in 1961.
In 1958, he married Nancy (Collins) Barry.
Admitted to the NH Bar in 1961, Barry began practicing law in Nashua until beginning his career in federal court. He was the clerk of court for the U.S. District Court – District of NH from 1969 to 1984, when he was appointed magistrate judge. He retired from the bench in September 1995.
After retiring from the bench and up until his death, Barry continued to practice law with his son, William H. Barry III, at the Barry Law Office on Main Street in Nashua.
Barry was a lifelong member of the Democratic Party and was a delegate to the 1964 Democratic National Convention.
He enjoyed fishing, golfing, camping and, most importantly, spending time with his family. He was a parishioner of The Parish of the Resurrection in Nashua.
In addition to Nancy, his wife of 44 years, Barry’s survivors include son William H. Barry III of Nashua; two daughters, Julia Barry of Chapel Hill, NC and Maura J. McIntyre of Nashua; six grandchildren; two sisters, Patricia Wolfe of Lowville, NY and Jane Fox of Hingham, Mass.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
