Three-Year Legal Services Campaign Nears $750,000 Goal in First Year
By: W. John Funk & Emily Gray Rice Campaign Co-Chairs
THE NEW HAMPSHIRE Bar Foundation celebrated the end of the first year of the three-year Campaign for Legal Services at its annual dinner on May 22, 2003. We thank law firm, corporate and individual donors for their generous giving during year one, which has resulted in the campaign very nearly hitting its three-year $750,000 goal in just one year.
Even though we are near our original three-year fundraising goal, the campaign will continue to raise money during the next two years; the campaign’s financial goals will be reset to reflect deepening needs of legal aid providers and their clients. Just this year, New Hampshire Legal Assistance lost two major federal grants. The Legal Advice and Referral Center is experiencing increased phone calls and intakes. The NH Bar’s Pro Bono Program is tackling additional unmet legal needs of children in the area of special education, where access to representation is sorely limited, while also boosting efforts to meet the growing demand for assistance with contested family law matters. This scenario of increasing needs and decreasing funding underscores the importance of the campaign, and the need to continue to raise more money in order to pursue the promise of equal justice for all in New Hampshire.
We would like to thank Campaign Steering Committee members for their hard work soliciting their firms and their friends and helping to steer a complex campaign through a troubled economy. Campaign Steering Committee members are:
W. John Funk, Gallagher Callahan & Gartrell, Concord – Co-Chair
Emily G. Rice, Orr & Reno, Concord – Co-Chair

And a reminder: It’s not too late to become involved with the Campaign for Legal Services. One of the recurring refrains from year one of the campaign was: "If the legal community does not support the campaign, who else will?" and one goal of the campaign is to gain support from as broad a range of lawyers and firms as possible. In year two, the campaign will broaden its focus and invite other stakeholders in the justice system, including corporate and foundation partners, to participate. However, there are still many lawyers and law firms that have not yet joined the campaign as supporters. We hope that we will be able to continue to increase the percentage of participation by members of the Bar.
