Bar News - June 20, 2003

Meet the Board of Governors

Russell F. Hilliard
President

Firm/Organization: Upton & Hatfield, Concord.

Practice area: Litigation.

Bar activities: Current member, NHBA CLE Committee, Insurance Agency Committee and Casemaker task force and chair of the Professionalism Committee; previously served on Board of Governors from 1979-81; member, Legislative Ethics Committee, 1991-97 (chair 1993-97); Board of Bar Examiners, 1981-90; and NHBA Legislative Counsel, 1979-83; Merrimack County Bar president, 1978-79.

Major challenges facing the Bar: Maintaining member and public services.

Favorite spot in NH: The Baldface Circle Trail.

What is your pet peeve about practicing law? Scheduling snafus.

What was the best summer job you ever had? Working on a Goffstown sewer study.

What was the best advice your mother ever gave you? Get your work done on time.

What would you be doing if you weren’t a lawyer? I’d be a teacher.

What do you do when you’re not being a lawyer? Hike, read.

Why do you participate in Bar affairs? Because I should.

Favorite magazine? Boston Globe Sunday magazine.

Book? "A Prayer for Owen Meany."
Movie? "Twelve Angry Men."
Meal? Lobster.

James D. Gleason
President-Elect

Firm/Organization: Gleason Law Office, PLLC, Henniker.

Practice area: General trial practice.

Bar activities: Governor-at-large on NHBA Board of Governors, 1984-87; director, NH Bar Foundation, 1984-87; chair, NH Trial Lawyers CLE Committee, 1985-87; former chair, Committee on Prepaid Legal Services and Committee on Group Insurance and Pension Plans; member, Association of Trial Lawyers of America, NH Trial Lawyers Association and American Inns of Court; founding member, NH Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.

Major challenges facing the Bar: Efforts to deunify the Bar, which will ultimately dilute our ability as an association to provide significant public service and education. The practice of law is an honor that imposes certain obligations upon us, not the least of which is public service. If we remain united as an association we will more effectively serve those less fortunate who have limited access to the best legal system in the world. The current deunification efforts are an opportunity for us as an association to make it known that we are not simply members of a work force; we are a proud profession of immense importance to our communities.

Favorite spot in NH: My backyard.

What is your pet peeve about practicing law? Clients who call to seek assistance in avoiding jury duty.

What was the best summer job you ever had? Working the 7/12 shift in the Pontiac, Michigan foundry. A 12-hour shift, seven days a week will teach most college students that grades are indeed important, as are working conditions.

What was the best advice your mother ever gave you? Say your prayers.

What would you be doing if you weren’t a lawyer? Teaching high school, coaching football and golf.

What do you do when you’re not being a lawyer? I try real hard to be a good dad.

Why do you participate in Bar affairs? I get more than I give – it’s a bargain. The Bar affairs remind me that there are others in the profession concerned with "helping people" and serving their communities.

Favorite magazine? Sports Illustrated. Are there any other magazines?

Tell us one interesting thing about yourself. My bride of 28 years and I had our fourth child when our oldest was but four years old. No twins. Do the math. Amazingly, we are still somewhat competent, although not completely sane.

Gregory T. Martin
Cheshire County Governor

Firm/Organization: Sole practitioner in Keene.

Practice area: General practice with concentration in family law matters.

Bar activities: I’m a member of the Bar’s Family Law, Workers’ Compensation and Alternative Dispute Resolution Sections and a member of the Bar committee preparing for the implementation of a new Chapter 182, which deals with the use of mediation in custody cases.

Major challenges facing the Bar: Facing deunification; responding effectively to the criticisms of the state Legislature to the judiciary and our legal system; and providing much-needed assistance to solo practitioners and lawyers in small firms.

Favorite spot in NH: The lounge chair on the deck of the family cottage on Lake Warren in Alstead. My second favorite spot is the view from the top of Mount Monadnock on a clear day.

What is your pet peeve about practicing law? People complain about "cutthroat" lawyers until they need someone to represent them in legal matters.

What was the best summer job you ever had? Working as a legislative assistant on Capitol Hill in Washington. With all the fundraising activities going on around me, I got most of my food and drink that summer for free!

What was the best advice your mother ever gave you? To always wear clean underwear.

What would you be doing if you weren’t a lawyer? I would be a card dealer in Las Vegas.

What do you do when you’re not being a lawyer? I read books, play cards, watch movies and garden.

Why do you participate in Bar affairs? Because I want to have an impact on what is happening at the state level.

Favorite magazine? Pugtalk (because I have a two-year-old Pug, named Grady).

Book? "Exodus" by Leon Uris.
Movie? "The Great Escape."
Meal? My mother’s meatloaf with a baked potato and corn on the cob.

Tell us one interesting thing about yourself. I am a certified New Hampshire marital mediator and I train others to mediate.
