Tilton was born May 22, 1917, in Laconia, son of Frank Pierce Tilton and Leonora (Gould) Tilton and was a lifelong resident of Laconia.

He graduated from Laconia High School in 1935 and from the University of New Hampshire, Durham, in 1939. He served in the Army Air Force during World War II, where he was a gunner and a radio operator. A graduate of Boston University Law School, he was admitted to the NH Bar in 1942.

Tilton was an attorney for the Tilton and Tilton Law Firm and for 30 years was clerk for Belknap County Superior Court, having retired in 1987. For 30 years, he and his wife, Bertha, also owned Prescott’s Bay View, and he and his brother, Dick, were owners of the Laconia Bowling Alleys.

He served on the Laconia City Council, Ward 6, for several years and was elected to the New Hampshire Legislature in 1951. From 1947-1956 he was the city solicitor and probation officer for Laconia Municipal Court.

Survivors include several nephews and nieces, including Richard P. Tilton of Laconia and Deborah Tilton Cotting of Lynnfield, Mass; and many great nephews and great nieces.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the New Hampshire Humane Society, P.O. Box 572, Laconia, NH 03247.

Amy Seidman

Amy Seidman, a Vermont criminal defense attorney who worked for a time at the Rudman U.S. Courthouse in Concord as a federal public defender, died in her home in East Dover, Vermont, on Monday, June 23, 2003. She was 49.

Born and raised in New York City, Seidman attended Goddard College in Plainfield, Vermont, in the 1970s. A graduate of New York’s Cardozo Law School, she was admitted to the state bar in both New York and Vermont and to the federal bar for six district courts, including New Hampshire’s, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia.

Seidman had a long career as a public defender in five states, serving as a trial attorney for the New York Legal Aid Society and as an assistant federal public defender in Dallas, Washington, D.C., and Concord. She worked most recently in White River Junction, Vermont.

Representing only indigent people, Seidman was known as an untiring advocate for both the civil and constitutional rights of her clients. She conducted over 40 felony jury trials during her career and served as a faculty member at the National Institute for Trial Advocacy, Cardozo Law School and the University of San Francisco School of Law.

A long-time member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, Seidman was recently awarded the President’s Commendation for Lifetime Service. She was also a generous legal advisor, providing pro bono services to her friends and colleagues.

During her spare time, she loved to travel, entertain friends and cook.

Seidman is survived by her husband, Vince Parker, and her brother, Karl Seidman, of Acton, Mass.

A memorial celebration of her life for all friends and colleagues will take place, as she requested, at both her home in East Dover, Vermont on  Saturday, Aug. 9 (rain date Aug. 10) and in New York City on Sunday, Aug. 17.

Family and friends also intend to adopt a weeping willow tree, in Amy’s name, next to the tree adopted in her mother’s name in Central Park. Those wishing to contribute towards this may send contributions to: Amy Seidman Memorial Tree, P.O. Box 630, East Dover, VT 05341.

If more contributions are made toward the memorial tree than are needed, the remainder will be added to the Amy Seidman Memorial Scholarship Fund being established by the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. Contributions directly to the scholarship fund may be made to: NACDL-Amy Seidman Memorial Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 630, East Dover, VT 05341.

In memory of our colleague Robert P. Tilton, the New Hampshire Bar Association’s Board of Governors has contributed to the New Hampshire Bar Foundation, 112 Pleasant Street, Concord, NH 03301.
