IP Section Meeting

Sheehan Phinney Bass + Green will host the NH Bar’s Intellectual Property Section meeting on Thursday, Sept. 18. Douglas Verge, an attorney at the firm and a founding member and director of its Intellectual Property Group, will make a presentation on the Madrid Protocol, an independent international trademark registration agreement reached in 1989. The United States has become a party to the agreement and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office is enacting rules to implement the protocol. The Madrid Protocol permits international registrations to build upon a home country application.

For more information on the meeting, contact Sections/Member Services Coordinator Audrey Carrel at 224-6942 or at acarrel@nhbar.org.

Two Bar Pamphlets Updated

Now available are updated versions of Bar Association information pamphlets written by the NHBA Public Information Committee.

"Your Rights Under the Right-to-Know Law" has been updated with the assistance of attorney William Chapman of the Orr & Reno law firm. The pamphlet covers such areas as what public meetings must be open to the public, under what exceptions meetings can be closed, what rights the public has to speak at public meetings, what constitutes a public record under the law, and how records can be accessed. The pamphlet also discusses the federal Freedom of Information Act.

"Selecting, Hiring and Working With a Lawyer," updated by the NHBA legal services department, includes a short section on the Internet and updates information about dispute resolution procedures. The pamphlet covers such issues as how to select a lawyer, offers questions a prospective client can ask to determine whether an attorney is right for him or her, explains various types of legal fees, and provides tips on how to work effectively with an attorney on an ongoing matter. The pamphlet lists legal services for clients who cannot afford a lawyer.

Contact Sheila Dion at the Lawyer Referral Service at 224-6942 or at sdion@nhbar.org to order copies of the "Selecting...a Lawyer" pamphlet or visit "For the Public" to access these and other Bar pamphlets.

Due to budgetary constraints, the Right-to-Know pamphlet is only available on the Web site at the present time.
