Nurturing Democracy in China
THE NH WORLD AFFAIRS COUNCIL is holding a program titled, "Growing Grassroots Diplomacy in China," on Thursday, Oct. 23 at 5:30 p.m. at Franklin Pierce Law Center, Concord.
The program speaker will be Christine Beasley, who visits China about eight times a year to help develop democratic processes and understanding in rural and urban areas. She works for the International Republican Institute, a Washington, D.C.-based nonpartisan, nonprofit that conducts programs in 100 countries to promote democracy and strengthen free markets and the rule of law. During her work for the Institute, she has visited almost every province in China to inform people how to organize, vote and hold elections at the local level, how to use legal aid programs and how to draft legislation with local party congresses. Beasley will describe her work, some of her experiences and the challenges democracy faces in today's China, as well as answering audience questions.
This is a free event. Before the discussion begins, there will be a wine and cheese reception. Call 230-9666 or e-mail council@wacnh.org if you plan to attend.
