Professionalism Committee Plans For a Busy Year
By: Joseph N. Laplante
RUSSELL HILLIARD, FORMER chair of the NH Bar Association's Professionalism Committee, has taken the reins as Bar Association president. The committee's veterans, as well as its new members, are hoping to continue the momentum Russ has created through a number of initiatives aimed at promoting professionalism among NH attorneys:
Statewide Professionalism Day. After two successful "Statewide Professionalism Day" events held simultaneously at all 11 Superior Courthouses in November 2001 and February 2003, the Professionalism Committee has decided to hold off on another 11-site statewide event until early 2005. In the meantime...
Professionalism Presentation at the Bar Midyear Meeting. Committee members Paul Pudloski and Arnie Rosenblatt are coordinating a professionalism presentation for the Bar's Midyear Meeting, which will be held at the Wayfarer Inn in Bedford on Feb. 13, 2004. The goal of the presentation will be to apprise Granite State attorneys of traditional as well as lesser-known avenues for professionalism.
Professionalism "Road Show." Also under discussion is the possibility of specifically tailoring a version of the Midyear Meeting professionalism program for presentation to local bar associations, county bar associations and chapters of New Hampshire's various Inns of Court.
Mentoring Program. The Professionalism Committee has initiated a partnership with the New Lawyers Committee, chaired by Jason Craven, to re-establish and invigorate the Bar's mentoring program.
Criminal Justice. Professionalism Committee members Cathy Green and Dave Garfunkel are spearheading a committee-sponsored presentation on professionalism issues in the criminal justice system. In particular, Cathy and David want to focus on (1) civility between prosecutors and defense counsel; and (2) a proper understanding of the role of the defense attorney in criminal cases as it relates to professionalism. Expect to see a program offered this spring.
Pro Bono. Committee members Ken Barnes and Marilyn McNamara are exploring ways to encourage more attorneys to take on pro bono work in areas outside the traditional family law cases.
Bar News Articles. Finally, as in years past, members of the Professionalism Committee will continue to author periodic articles and columns on professionalism-related issues for publication in Bar News.
