Suffolk Law Alimni Launch Loan-Assistance Program
INTRODUCED LAST YEAR at a law school alumni dinner at the 2003 NHBA Midyear Meeting, a loan-assistance program to provide a measure of financial relief to new attorneys in lower-paying public sector positions became a reality earlier this month. Officers of the NH chapter of the Suffolk Law School Alumni Association presented stipends to five New Hampshire attorneys in public-sector positions to assist them with paying educational loans.
(A Nov. 21, 2003 Bar News article focusing on the law school debt burdens of new lawyers unfortunately omitted mention of this new program.)
Although the amounts were modest – based on the initial amounts raised through alumni contributions in the past year –NH Suffolk Alumni President Jennifer Parent told the recipients that the presentation of funds was a gesture of respect for their choice of public sector work. "We are proud of the history of Suffolk graduates working in public service, and we hope that this loan-assistance program will help you continue this important work."
Also on hand were Suffolk alumni officer Roger Phillips and Probate Court Administrative Judge John Maher, also a Suffolk alum. Presentations of checks were made to David Angwin and Jennifer Sandoval, assistant county attorneys in Hillsborough County; Dorothy Graham, of the NH Public Defender’s Office; Christine LaVallee, of NH Legal Assistance; and Lynne Zigmont of the Disabilities Rights Center.
