Bar News - December 19, 2003

'Round & About

M. Kristin Spath, chief of the Consumer Protection Bureau of the NH Attorney General’s Office, has been named the Merrimack County Lawyer of the Year by the Merrimack County Bar Association.

"Kris has dedicated her legal career to public service," said attorney and Franklin Pierce Law Center faculty member Brigette Siff Holmes in nominating Spath for the award. Spath’s career in public service began in 1985, when she went to work for the NH Public Defender Program. She went on to serve as deputy clerk of Merrimack County Superior Court, as a federal defender with the NH Federal Defender Office in Concord, and in her present position with the AG’s Office.

"Throughout her legal career, Kris has worked tirelessly defending the rights of many of the most disadvantaged citizens in our county and state," said Holmes. Among her efforts at the Attorney General’s Office on behalf of NH citizens, Holmes said, has been Spath’s implementation of consumer education programs for NH citizens, which specifically reach out to the most vulnerable consumers.

Spath has also volunteered time on weekends to serve as a consultant and panelist for the Pierce Law forum series "Legal Rights and Responsibilities Under U.S. Law" for immigrants and refugees.

"Kris has made remarkable contributions to the improvement of the well-being of citizens in Merrimack County, and throughout the state of New Hampshire" through her public interest work, Holmes said. "I believe Kris, and her nearly 18 years of committed public service to the citizens of Merrimack County and the state of New Hampshire, are worthy of recognition."

The NH Association of Counties recently named Assistant Rockingham County Attorney Thomas F. Reid as the assistant county attorney of the year.

Reid has been an assistant county attorney for Rockingham County since 1997, overseeing the prosecution of all cases in the absence of Rockingham County Attorney James M. Reams.

"I am very proud to have Tom Reid recognized for his hard work and the long hours that he puts in as my deputy," said Reams, adding that Reid has "single-handedly prosecuted some very significant cases."

Former NH Attorney General Philip T. McLaughlin was named the first recipient of the Nackey S. Loeb First Amendment Award. The award – named in honor of longtime Union Leader publisher Nackey S. Loeb and donated by her daughters, Nackey Scagliotti and Edie Tomasko – honors one New Hampshire resident, organization or group whose actions have reinforced the freedoms protected by the First Amendment, particularly freedom of speech and freedom of the press.

Among the accomplishments for which McLaughlin was recognized: passing a state civil rights bill allowing doctors to prescribe pain medication for the dying, without fear of prosecution; mediating the breakup of the Optima-CMC hospital merger; compelling the Diocese of Manchester to open up 10,000 pages of secret documents in light of allegations of sexual misconduct against priests; and visiting a mosque following the events of Sept. 11, 2001.

McLaughlin was chosen from a group of five nominees for the award. The other nominees included Plymouth attorney Patrice M. Scott, a prosecutor for the Plymouth Police Dept.
