Friends Pay Tribute to McGuirk

MOST OF RUSS McGuirk’s legal career was spent as a partner in the Portsmouth firm of Flynn, Powell & McGuirk, where he concentrated in the area of personal injury litigation. Over the years, he became very active in his practice, and in the 1960s and ‘70s, along with his equally active partner Tom Flynn, was one of the more prominent plaintiff’s attorneys in the state. Russ eventually developed into a "civil trial" technique guru, and was observed and admired by virtually every developing plaintiff’s attorney in New Hampshire.

Russ was always willing to share his experience and technique with budding trial attorneys. He was active in the American Trial Lawyers Association and served for a time as president of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers. He conducted trial technique seminars around the country for ATLA and generously assisted all of those who sought his guidance. Russ offered several trial technique writings and for a time his column in New Hampshire Bar Journal on the topic was the definitive text.

After a long and successful career in the plaintiff’s bar, Russ began to temper his practice in the late ‘70s. With the passing of his former partner Governor Wesley Powell, and with illness overtaking both Russ and Tom Flynn, the firm of Flynn, Powell & McGuirk became much less active.

Russ was most proud of his 50-year marriage to his loving wife, Anstress, and of his three children, Russell, Murray and Suzanne.

The passing of Russell McGuirk signifies the end of an era for all New Hampshire lawyers who so admired Russ during their formative years. There are still several senior trial lawyers in Manchester and Concord defense firms who will certainly remember Russ and his superior skills. Russ’s passing triggers many fond memories of earlier and simpler times at the New Hampshire Bar.
