Attorneys Come From Afar to Counsel Soldiers

NEARLY 100 SOLDIERS from the New Hampshire-based 3rd Battalion of the 172nd Mountain Infantry Regiment, preparing for active-duty deployment overseas, received pro bono legal services Jan. 10-11, 2004, at a clinic organized by the NHBA Pro Bono Referral Program. NHBA members traveled to Concord from as far away as Keene and Portland, Maine, over the weekend to assist.

More than two dozen volunteers, including attorneys, paralegals, Bar staff and family members of Bar staff, assisted the activated members of the NH Army National Guard in drawing up wills, powers of attorney, and other legal documents during sessions at the Concord Armory. The volunteers were recruited by the Pro Bono Program and through the Bar’s E-Bulletin, and were coordinated by Legal Services Director Ginny Martin and Assistant Pro Bono Coordinator Pam Dodge in cooperation with Col. Peter Duffy, judge advocate general of the NH National Guard.

Food for the volunteers was donated by Bagel Works and Panera Bread.

Military Law Section to Hold First Meeting

On Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2004 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., the newly created Military Law Section of the New Hampshire Bar Association will hold its initial organizational meeting, including the election of officers. The meeting will be held at the Bar Center.

The goal of the Section is to educate the Bar regarding military legal issues arising under federal and state law affecting soldiers and their families. The Section will also encourage and help orchestrate the delivery of volunteer legal services from members of the Bar to soldiers and their families during mobilization.

This is your chance to help shape how this section is run, as well as to give your input on such topics as meeting times and places, section-specific CLE offerings, future speakers and meeting topics. The more members who attend, the more the Section will be able to meet the needs of its members.

If you wish to be considered for election, please come prepared to make a few brief remarks regarding your ideas to your fellow colleagues.

Please RSVP to Anne Breault, Sections Coordinator, at abreault@nhbar.org or call (603) 224-6942 by Feb. 12, 2004.

NH attorneys counsel soldiers

Attorney Steve Bunker (right) and NHBA Assistant Pro Bono Coordinator Cindee Carter assist a National Guardsman with estate-planning documents at the Concord Armory earlier this month. The table is labeled "Whole Deal" to indicate that estate-planning documents could be drafted, signed and notarized at that location.
