Judge Bownes Memorialized

Judge Bownes Memorial

U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Stephen Breyer (left) and David Souter unveiled a portrait of the late US Circuit Court Judge Hugh H. Bownes at a memorial service held at the Warren B. Rudman U.S. Courthouse on Dec. 13, 2003. Judge Bownes, Justice Souter said, had "the virtue of facing disagreeable facts, and making sure others faced those facts. It was as if he knew that other human beings do not so much deny responsibility as evade it." Bownes, originally of Laconia, died Nov. 5 at the age of 83. His portrait hangs in the courtoom of the First Circuit Court of Appeals in the John Joseph Moakley Federal Courthouse in Boston.
