Supreme Court Operations Audit, Other Reforms Ease Backlog
THE NEW HAMPSHIRE Supreme Court hopes that the first-ever independent review of court operations will help to improve its performance as the state’s only forum for appeal.
Penelope J. Wentland, a senior court management consultant with the National Center for State Courts (NCSC), will begin an analysis of court operations beginning April 24. Wentland will present a final report and recommendations to the Supreme Court in October.
According to Supreme Court Chief Justice David A. Brock, the review will help the court to achieve "the highest level of appellate case processing within the limits of its fiscal resources."
Through various initiatives, including case screening conferences and the "Rocket Docket," the Supreme Court has been successful in reducing a case backlog that has grown from 114 cases pending in 1970 to 750 cases pending in 2000.
