Bar Association Board Approves Resolutions on Judicial Selection
THE NH BAR Association Board of Governors, at the request of the Bar’s Gender Equality Committee, approved a resolution urging that the individuals and entities responsible for selecting, appointing and confirming judicial appointees consider appointing women to provide greater diversity on the bench. A second resolution also was approved underscoring the Bar’s support for the merit selection process while reiterating the need for diversity to be considered as a factor in judicial appointments.
The Board of Governors, at its April 5 meeting, approved the following resolutions:
RESOLVED: That the New Hampshire Bar Association Board of Governors encourages the governor, Executive Council and the Judicial Selection Commission to consider the appointment of women to the state judiciary in an effort to diversify the bench so that it is more reflective of the demographics of our state population. This resolution reaffirms the Bar’s support of the recommendations of its Task Force on Women in the Bar (1988), one of which specifically called for the appointment of more qualified women to the bench.
RESOLVED: That the Board of Governors encourages the governor to continue the merit selection process as the best way to ensure the most highly qualified judicial candidates; and that in selecting from those candidates referred to her by the commission, appointments be made in a balanced way to reflect the demographics of the state.
In discussing the resolutions at the Board meeting, Gender Equality Committee Chair Lucy Hodder noted that while women comprise nearly 30 percent of the active Bar membership, and about 50 percent of lawyers entering the profession, only 13 percent of the state judiciary currently is female.
