Jack B. Middleton to Receive the Frank Rowe Kenison Award

JACK B. MIDDLETON will receive the 2004 Kenison Award, the NH Bar Foundation’s highest honor, at the organization’s Annual Dinner on May 27, 2004 at the Event Center at CR Sparks in Bedford.

"I’m truly surprised and very honored to be receiving this award," says Middleton, partner of McLane, Graf, Raulerson & Middleton in Manchester. "It had never occurred to me that I would be considered for something like this." He adds that he is especially in awe of the recognition; having practiced 21 years of his 48-year career in front of the late Frank R. Kenison, a Chief Justice of the NH Supreme Court. Middleton says, "I knew him and was impressed by him. Intellectually, he was a real leader in many ways in the development of the law. He was also a very kind and patient man who always sought justice."

"Jack has been a tireless advocate for justice for all with exceptional vision and dedication throughout his career," explains David Snyder, NHBF director. Middleton was one of the Foundation’s directors, and its longest sitting chair. He was twice the co-chair of the Bar Center Campaign and has served as a trustee and as president of the National Conference of Bar Foundations.

Middleton also argued the case for IOLTA before the NH Supreme Court, making New Hampshire the second state in the country to be collecting IOLTA revenue to help support legal services. McLane is also one of the Foundation’s first Pacesetters, firms who commit $500 per lawyer/per year to the foundation.

"One of Jack’s greatest achievements is in developing a culture within his firm of encouraging the involvement of private practice lawyers in the New Hampshire Bar Foundation, specifically, and in community service, in general," says Paul Chant, chair of both the NHBF Board and the Awards Committee. "His involvement in our foundation and other professional and civic organizations is legendary."

Middleton, who began his legal career in 1956, is a former president of the New Hampshire Bar Association and has served as a delegate to the American Bar Association (ABA). He was also president of the National Conference of Bar Presidents and former director and president of the New England Bar Association. Middleton has had leadership roles in the Greater Manchester United Way, Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce, Greater Manchester Development Corporation, New England Council, NH Supreme Court Advisory Rules Committee, and Franklin Pierce Law Center.

"Jack Middleton exemplifies everything that this award represents," says John Tobin, executive director of New Hampshire Legal Assistance and a past Kenison Award recipient. "He is a model of public-spirited leadership; a highly successful private practitioner who is also a visionary and who works tirelessly to improve our system of justice."
