Foreign Delegations Touring NH
Belarus civil protection leaders stand in front of UNH Library. Colonel Victor Tishchenko (dark coat in front) is chief of 5000 national firefighters. Ted Howard, director of UNH’s Center of International Education (rear left) and former US Ambassador George Bruno (in front of Dr. Howard) manage the democracy strengthening program in NH. WHILE THE US IS making every effort to plant the seeds of democracy in such places as Iraq and Afghanistan, a similar effort is taking place in New Hampshire. May 1-5, USA Group International, in a program called "Partnership for Peace—New Hampshire 2004," is hosting a group of 10 top officials from FYR Macedonia, headed by the former Minister of Defense. After a stop in Washington, DC, the group will visit NH for workshops, including a presentation at the State House on the role of the media in times of emergency. Attorney Charles G. Douglas, a former NH Supreme Court justice and member of the U.S. House of Representatives, is slated to speak.
A similar event took place March 6-14 with a 15-person delegation from the Republic of Belarus, formerly a part of the Soviet Union. USA Group International, the University of New Hampshire, the NH National Guard and the US Department of Defense presented workshops in both Russian and English, and demonstrated how government, non-profit organizations and the private sector respond and cooperate in times of natural emergencies, such as earthquakes, floods, forest fires, etc.
Attorney George Bruno, Managing Director of USA Group International, organizes the events.
