Larger-than-Usual Group of Admittees Sworn In
By: Anita S. Becker & Dan Wise

In a break with past protocol, new Bar members were personally congratulated in a receiving line by the state's Supreme Court Justices.
JUSTICE RICHARD E. GALWAY, representing the NH Supreme Court, told a group of newly admitted Bar members that they should view themselves as more than simply "vendors of legal services." He advised them to uphold the New Hampshire Bar's traditions of volunteerism, professionalism, and collegiality. "The mantel has been passed to you."
At a May 24 special session of the court, that mantel was passed on to 119 new admittees-82 of which are members of other Bars admitted on motion. Typically, the spring swearing in is the smallest of the year, but this group included a large number of attorneys who had applied since the admission on motion process was approved in March 2003. The process requires much paperwork to gather and CLE requirements to meet, and then the applicants are vetted by the Supreme Court's Committee on Character & Fitness. (A follow up article will appear in the next issue of Bar News providing demographics on the newest group of admittees.)
The number of admittees in 2004 will likely be much larger than last year, when only 134 new attorneys were admitted (124 via regular bar admission and 10 on admission on motion). If past trends hold, the admission ceremony this fall -which includes mostly this year's law school graduates who passed the NH exam-could add 100 more lawyers to the Bar, which now exceeds 4,000 members on active status.
In addition to Galway, welcoming remarks were made by James Gleason, president-elect of the NH Bar Association, and Steven Tober, a member of the NHBA Board of Governors and New Hampshire State Delegate to the ABA.
"You will find that New Hampshire is large enough to present you with cosmopolitan legal issues, but small enough that you will get to know each other," Tober noted.
Two of the justices made motions for newly admitted experienced attorneys. Justice Joseph P. Nadeau nominated friend and neighbor Katherine W. Bubar and Justice Linda S. Dalianis her former Superior Court law clerk Annette M. Boelhouwer. Senior Associate Justice John T. Broderick, Jr. led the assembly in a round of applause for the family and friends in recognition of their support for the new Bar members.
The admittees at both ceremonies were invited to meet the justices in a receiving line, the first time this has been done, and attend a reception, hosted by the NHBA's New Lawyers Committee, immediately following the ceremonies.
The following 119 attorneys were admitted to the practice of law in the state of New Hampshire on May 24, 2004 at a special session of the NH Supreme Court:
