New Lawyers Committee Recaps Busy Year
By: Bruce W. Felmly
THE NEW LAWYERS Committee serves an important need by assisting new practitioners through transition into practice and with developing relationships with more experienced Bar members. The committee, which meets monthly, consists of a combination of new and experienced practitioners who have a wide range of practice interests and positions. During the 2003-2004 season, we accomplished a wide range of programs and events under the effective leadership of our chair Jason Craven.
The mentor program is a primary project of the committee. We are continuing to offer mentor relationships to new members of the Bar and believe they provide an excellent link to experienced practitioners who provide a wide range of advice and assistance. We are planning to expand the program and have worked throughout the year to develop new promotional materials and contacts with potential mentors. We need additional mentors and hope that anyone reading this who has an interest in serving as a mentor would get in touch with me. We also continue to draw on evaluation comments from our mentors and associates to improve the program.
Additionally, the committee substantially revised "Traps for the Unwary." Available at www.nhbar.org, this guide to helps New Hampshire attorneys avoid common law-related pitfalls. It has been updated and made timelier through the hard work of Jason Sullivan.
During the past year, the New Lawyers Committee has worked to enhance its participation in the Young Lawyers Division (YLD) of the ABA. Jennifer Parent, a long-standing member of our committee, is the district representative for New Hampshire and Massachusetts and has been very active at YLD meetings and programs. This is an excellent opportunity for us to bring back ideas and programming from other jurisdictions that can be of assistance to New Hampshire lawyers.
The committee has hosted a number of programs to encourage networking and so cial interaction. In November 2003, working through our outreach co-chairs Mary Sheffer and Jennifer Parent, we hosted the second annual "Welcome to the Bar Reception." This was held at Franklin Pierce Law Center and was well attended. The committee also hosted a networking event for new lawyers with insurance and CPA professionals in May. And, we are planning a group trip to a New Hampshire Fisher Cats game on August 12 (for registration form go to Meetings & Events; with questions, contact Melissa Childs at mchilds@nhbar.org, or (603) 224-6942).
We find these opportunities for new lawyers to interact with each other and with experienced Bar members to be an asset.
The committee appreciates the efforts of Bar staff members Denice DeStefano and Melissa Childs on our behalf.
The New Lawyers Committee encourages ideas and suggestions for future programs.
