Fundraising Efforts Highlighted at Bar Foundation Dinner
TONY McMANUS, CHAIR of the NH Bar Foundation, and Tina Abramson, the foundation’s executive director, pointed out the following highlights of the NHBF’s fundraising efforts over the past year.
- Over the last five years, the Bar Foundation has worked to combine the resources of legal services programs in NH to set up a comprehensive legal services program. In the last year, the NHBF has established a joint fundraising effort for NH legal services organizations and provided a $50,000 annual grant to fund a permanent fundraiser to coordinate the effort. John and Skye Maher made a substantial contribution toward this program, according to McManus. The Mahers’ contribution was recognized by CONFR (Continuing Education in Fundraising) as the most significant donation to any non-profit organization in NH during the past year, "which is an extraordinary achievement for them and for us," said McManus.
- The Bar Foundation in the past year established the Stanley Brown Fund to support programs relating to public policy and legislative education on justice matters. In the last six months, a portion of the fund has been used to underwrite, with the NH Judicial Council, a study of the nationwide practices of judicial appointment and review by the National Center for State Courts (NCSC). A copy of the report has been provided to legislative leaders and members of the House and Senate judiciary committees and is available through the NCSC Web site.
- With support from the Al Lynch Fund, the Bar Foundation and Franklin Pierce Law Center will be studying changes in the standards of property rights in NH.
- The NHBF continues to work to increase lawyer participation in IOLTA (Interest on Lawyers Trust Account) and to increase banks’ commitment to raise interest rates. IOLTA provides the majority of funding for legal services for low-income NH residents, according to Abramson.
