James Leary Reappointed to IOLTA Grants Committee
JAMES LEARY IS the sole nominee for one vacancy on the IOLTA Grants Committee for the 2005 fiscal year. The NH Bar Foundation’s by-laws state that in the event of an uncontested election, the Foundation’s board of directors can bypass balloting. Therefore, the board reappointed Leary to the Grants Committee, term of office effective immediately.
Leary practices law at Sullivan & Gregg in Nashua and serves as special justice to the Nashua District Court. The NH Supreme Court established New Hampshire’s IOLTA Program in November 1982 for the purpose of providing legal services to the disadvantaged and for public education relating to the courts and legal matters. Since Leary joined the IOLTA Committee in 1999, over $6 million in grants has been disbursed to organizations throughout the state.
"As a member of the Committee, my concern has been providing legal services to the largest number of individuals possible," says Leary. "Numerous grant requests are received each year and the Committee must consider each and decide which to fund. While a number of the grants are for interesting projects, I looked at the total projected number of individuals served in prioritizing the applications."
According to Leary’s candidate’s statement: "If elected, I would continue to support the ‘largest bang for the buck’ analysis in considering grant applications. I have also had the pleasure of observing the largest recipients to the IOLTA funds—New Hampshire Legal Assistance, New Hampshire Pro Bono, and Legal Advice and Referral Center (LARC)—work cooperatively to support legal services to the poor. We are truly lucky to have such a group of individuals dedicated to public service working in conjunction with each other to assist those with the need for legal services."
Leary’s term will run through June of 2009. Other members of the IOLTA Grants Committee include: Michael A. Fuerst, with his first term expiring in 2005; Robert E. Raiche Sr., with his first term expiring in 2006; Patti Blanchette, whose second term expires in 2007; and Claudia C. Damon, whose second term expires in 2008.
