New Lawyers: Take Advantage of Local, National Opportunities
By: Jennifer L. Parent
THERE ARE opportunities for new lawyers everywhere. Participation in the New Lawyers Committee of the NHBA offers new Bar members networking, CLEs, mentoring opportunities, and much more.
For example, last month, the Committee kicked off its year with a BBQ at a New Hampshire Fisher Cats’ game in Manchester. About 30 people attended and enjoyed an evening of good company.
New Lawyers Committee members, left to right, Laurel Van Buskirk and Dorcas Gordon, both admitted to the NH Bar in 2003, enjoy an evening of baseball, food, and camaraderie with other new attorneys.
The American Bar Association Young Lawyers Division (ABA/YLD) also offers new lawyers great opportunities. The YLD allows new lawyers the chance to meet other lawyers nationwide, to participate in public and member service projects, and to receive substantive CLE training from nationally renowned attorneys. Membership in the YLD is open to all ABA members who are under the age of 36 or who have been practicing in their first Bar for less than five years, whichever date comes later.
The NHBA’s New Lawyers Committee is included among the more than 300 state and local affiliates of the ABA/YLD. There are four major conferences open to the YLD.
As the chair of the New Lawyers Committee, I am just returning from the Annual Conference in Atlanta, held in August. New Hampshire is allowed two voting delegates at the YLD Assembly and two other New Hampshire new lawyers joined me at this conference – Heather Krans and Joceline Champagne. The next conference is in Austin, Texas, in October.
Watch the Bar News for more information about the many Committee events planned for this year. If you have questions, contact the Bar Association at (603) 224-6942, or go to www.nhbar.org. I encourage anyone interested in finding out more about the YLD to visit the ABA Web site at www.abanet.org/yld.
Attorney Jennifer L. Parent, with McLane, Graf, Raulerson and Middleton, is chair of the New Lawyers Committee.
