Book Review ~ The Last Dance

Facing Alzheimer's with Love & Laughter
By Ann McLane Kuster with Susan McLane

THERE ARE 5 MILLION people in America who have Alzheimer's disease, 20,000 in New Hampshire alone. Many people have someone in their lives-a friend or family member-who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's.

In the hope that others may find solace in knowing they are not alone, Susan McLane and her family have courageously shared their struggles as she slips away from them one day at a time. The Last Dance is this family's story about learning to "swim in the deep end of the lake." Susan's daughter, attorney Ann McLane Kuster, of the Rath, Young & Pignatelli law firm in Concord, began writing the book as "the world's longest email" for their relatives. Drawn from taped conversations with her mother on special Friday visits, Anne traces the threads that held her mother's life together-family and politics.

As David Broder of The Washington Post, who wrote the foreword, says: "The Last Dance is a love story...I cannot imagine anyone finishing this book without a sense of gratitude for what Annie and Susan and all their family have allowed the readers to share. Like their hospitality, it warms your heart and lifts your spirit."

Susan McLane has led a life of service and has made many contributions during her 25 years in the NH legislature. "Susie" has spoken up for the mentally ill, for welfare mothers, for dignity in dying; she has fought to save the environment, preserving lakes and protecting wildlife. Advocating for women in politics, she has been tireless in her efforts to raise funds and recruit candidates.

Visit the Web site www.thelastdance.org for information on purchasing the book and for speaking engagements featuring Ann McLane Kuster.
