Attorney Skydives for Breast Cancer Fundraiser
GIVING BACK 2005
PAULA PHILBROOK, a Bar member based in Amherst, is seeking support for Jump for the Cause, a breast cancer fundraiser. Jump for the Cause, whose participants skydive to fulfill pledges, offers people a chance to contribute either by donating directly themselves or by getting their employers to donate or match employee funds. The jumps will take place from September 26 to October 1, 2005, so donors have several months to help Philbrook meet the pledge goal of $2500, although she hopes to raise $5000.
The organization also sells fundraising items: hats, shirts, mouse pads, mugs, etc., which may be purchased online. A sponsor may ask Philbrook to devote a particular jump to a designated honoree and she will carry with her a small memento of the person honored. She is asking a donation of at least $30 for each of these honorees.
Attorney Philbrook also offers another option: she will attach an embroidered memorial name patch to her jumpsuit for $60, which will include the cost of making the patch. Such honorees will be named on the Jump for the Cause Web site and patches will be returned to donors after the dive.
The best women skydivers from around the world will be participating in the event—about 150 in all. Besides raising money for breast cancer research, they hope to break the women’s World Record for Skydiving Formations. They plan to build the largest all-women skydiving formation by linking together in freefall. Philbrook is a recruiter for other women skydivers for the event, which is by invitation only.
Breast cancer afflicts 182,000 women every year and 1,600 men. Of those afflicted, 43,000 women and 400 men die. The proceeds from Jump for the Cause go to City of Hope, an innovative biomedical research, treatment and educational institution devoted to the prevention and cure of cancer and other life-threatening diseases.
