Two North Country Lawyers to be Honored at Midyear Meeting
Attorney David King, of Colebrook, and Alethea Froburg, of Berlin will be recognized for their devotion to community service and equal justice at the 2005 NHBA Midyear Meeting on Feb. 18.
Vickie M. Bunnell Award
King, a partner in the Colebrook firm of Waystack & King, was selected for the award by NHBA President James D. Gleason. "David is an especially deserving recipient of the Vickie Bunnell Award for Community Service," Gleason said. "His innate humility should not shield him from public recognition for the exceptional record of community service he has provided to the North Country. It is not an exaggeration to say that he is an exemplary role model for his community and for his chosen profession."
The Vickie M. Bunnell Award for Community Service was instituted in 1998 to honor the memory of Vickie M. Bunnell, A Country Lawyer" and to applaud the community spirit that is a hallmark of the legal profession. The award is presented to an attorney from a small firm (four or fewer attorneys) who has exhibited dedication and devotion to community by giving of their time and talents, legal or otherwise.
"I believe that Attorney Vickie Bunnell would be pleased that her colleague and friend is this year's recipient of the award presented in her honor," Gleason added. "Vickie and David practiced together early in their careers, and each shared a passion for serving the community and for upholding the standards of the profession. There are countless lawyers who work hard in our communities to benefit the common good, but there are none more deserving of the Vickie Bunnell Award for Community Service than Attorney David King." King, since 1990, has also sat as judge of the Coos County Probate Court. A Coos County native, he obtained his law degree from Franklin Pierce Law Center in 1984, and began practicing in NH that same year. He is currently completing a two-year term as a member of the NHBA Board of Governors representing Coos.
L. Jonathan Ross Award for Outstanding Pro Bono Service
Meanwhile, the NHBA Pro Bono Referral Program will present the L. Jonathan Ross Award for Outstanding Commitment to Legal Services for the Poor to Alethea Froburg, a Berlin attorney who has worked tirelessly for many years on behalf of clients referred through the Pro Bono program. A graduate of the University of Maine Law School, she has been an NHBA member since 1980. She has been the recipient of the Pro Bono County Attorney of the Year award for seven times, the last time being two years ago.
"Alethea Froburg has used her skills and knowledge as an attorney to make an enormous difference in the lives of North Country people," said Ginny Martin, NHBA Associate Executive Director for Legal Services. "Families living in poverty, victims of domestic abuse, children caught in the crossfire of divorce-they have all benefited from her wisdom and compassion, which she dispenses every day as a true community lawyer."
The Ross award is named in honor of Manchester attorney L. Jonathan Ross, a national leader in legal services and currently the NHBA's Delegate to the American Bar Association's House of Delegates.
