Bar Members in Armed Forces To Be Honored at Midyear Meeting

The New Hampshire Bar Association will present its 2005 Distinguished Service to the Public Award to each member of the New Hampshire Bar Association on active duty in the U.S. armed services including those who were activated from the National Guard or Reserves since 2002.

"In considering whom to honor for our public service award this year, it occurred to us that there was no more deserving a group of people than the men and women who have put their everyday lives on hold -and their lives on the line- to answer the call of their country for military service," said James D. Gleason, the 2004-5 NHBA President. "We hope that in some small way our recognition will provide some support in what are undoubtedly difficult times."

The presentation of the public service award will be made at the 2005 NHBA Midyear Membership Meeting Honors & Awards luncheon on Friday, Feb. 18, 2005 at the Quality Inn & Wayfarer Convention Center in Bedford.

Because few of the honorees will be in attendance at the Feb. 18 meeting to accept their awards in person, family and close friends of the Bar members displaced by their military assignments will be invited to the awards luncheon in their place. "We welcome the participation of the families of our members in this recognition," said Gleason, "It is fitting to recognize the sacrifices they are making as their loved ones fulfill their military obligations."

Pam Coughlin, wife of Maj. John Coughlin, now serving in Iraq, has agreed to accept the award and make brief remarks on behalf of the families. Coughlin is also a legislator and chair of the NH House of Representatives' Committee on Federal-State Relations and Veterans' Affairs. Brigadier General Kenneth R. Clark, the newly appointed Adjutant General of the NH National Guard, will also be on hand for the official recognition of the Bar's "citizen-soldiers."

The list of Bar members, published on pages eight and nine includes career military members as well as Bar members whose military commitments have displaced them from their personal and professional lives. As a series of articles published in the Bar News this fall illustrated, Bar members in uniform have traveled far and wide, risking danger and performing demanding tasks in their military assignments; some are serving as military lawyers while others are fulfilling other operational roles. (Ironically, the articles were written by Bar News Managing Editor Anita Becker, also an Army reservist. On Oct. 1, she was mobilized and is scheduled to spend a total of 24 months at Fort Drum, NY.)

Representatives of the Department of Defense and the Employer Support for the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), a support organization, also will be invited to the luncheon.
