David King to Receive Vicki M. Bunnell Award
Attorney David King of Colebrook will be presented with the Vickie M. Bunnell Award for Community Service at the 2005 NHBA Midyear Meeting on Feb. 18. The award was instituted in 1998 to honor the memory of "Vickie M. Bunnell, A Country Lawyer" and serves to applaud the community spirit that is a hallmark of the legal profession.
In response to the award, King commented, "I am very honored to have been chosen to receive this award for community service. As an attorney practicing in the town that I grew up in, community service goes hand-in-hand with practicing law. I know this is true for lawyers all over this state."
Given to an attorney from a small firm (four or fewer attorneys), the award recognizes a lawyer who has exhibited dedication and devotion to community by giving of his or her time and talents, legal or otherwise. A Coös County native, King received his law degree from Franklin Pierce Law Center in 1984 and King and Bunnell practiced together early in their careers.
"Receiving an award named for Vickie Bunnell is most special to me," continued King. "Vickie and I both grew up in the North Country and we both worked...prior to law school, for Fred Harrigan who was the publisher of the local newspaper, as well as a local attorney, special judge of the Colebrook District Court and Coös Probate Court judge."
After graduation, King returned to Colebrook to join Phil's firm. "I worked with Vickie for a year in Phil Waystack's office before she opened her own practice," said King. "Later, I succeeded Fred Harrigan in the Probate Court and Vickie was appointed as a special judge in the Colebrook District Court. I was elected to the NH legislature from Coös District 1 in 1982, while still in law school, and was a member of the judiciary committee, serving until 1984. I was also elected to the 17th Constitutional Convention in 1984."
King is now a partner in the Colebrook firm of Waystack & King and has sat as judge of the Coös County Probate Court since 1990. He is currently completing a two-year term as a member of the NHBA Board of Governors representing Coös County.
As for community involvement, King continued, "Shortly after my House term ended, I went to the local school meeting where the moderator suggested, at the end of the meeting, that I should take over as the next moderator. I have been elected every term by write-in votes ever since.
"In 1986 I took a seat on the board of our local hospital, the Upper Connecticut Valley Hospital, became its president in 1987; I continue in that role today. One of the biggest honors I have had was being selected as the New Hampshire Outstanding Hospital Trustee of the year by the New Hampshire Hospital Association in 2000. Having access to healthcare in the North Country is essential for our families and clients."
On the lighter side-over the past 40 years King has served on a number of boards and committees that have been trying to get a swimming pool built in Colebrook-and it is finally happening!
