Lawyers Serving in Legislature, Governor's Office ~ Continued
The front-page article in the Jan. 21, 2005, issue of Bar News, "New Leaders in Concord" did not mention several Bar members serving in the legislature and governor's office. The article was conceived to highlight those Bar members on legislative committees or in policy positions directly relating to court and legal issues. However, this approach overlooked other members of the Bar involved in government, and there were also some just plain goofs.
Sen. Peter Burling, formerly House Democratic leader, who was elected to the NH Senate to succeed Clifton Below, is the fourth attorney serving in the senate this term. Burling, of Cornish, has been named to three committees in the Senate: Energy and Economic Development; Public and Municipal Affairs; and Transportation and Interstate Cooperation.
On the House side, the article erroneously stated that Rep. Gregory Sorg, a Republican from Franconia, was new to the Judiciary Committee. He was a member of that committee in the last legislative session.
Also, Rep. Peter Sullivan, a Manchester Democrat, is serving on the Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee. Tara Reardon, a Concord Democrat, is serving on the Commerce Committee. Two attorneys who are not members of the Bar serve in the legislature: Anthony DiFruscia, a Windham Republican, is a Massachusetts attorney and Jack Pratt, a Walpole Democrat who formerly served on House Judiciary, is a retired lawyer and businessman. Maureen Mooney, a Massachusetts Law School graduate, is a resident of Merrimack, NH and is in her second term representing Hillsborough County District 19, Merrimack. This is also her second term on the House Judiciary Committee and her first as Clerk of the Committee.
If you are a Bar member or attorney serving in the legislature, please let us know and we will endeavor not to overlook your service in future coverage of the legislature.
In the governor's office, in addition to the Bar members mentioned in the last article, two recent admittees, one a NH Bar member, have joined Gov. Lynch's staff. Michael Beland of Durham, is working in the Governor's Office of Citizens' Services. Beland, who last year received his law degree from the University of Maryland, was admitted to the New Hampshire Bar in October 2004. Serving as Executive Assistant to the Governor is Christen Bergeron, of Raymond. Bergeron, who previously worked in the Massachusetts Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation, received her law degree from Suffolk University Law School in 2004 and was admitted to the Massachusetts Bar in December 2004.
