Gretchen Witt Named Acting US Attorney
GRETCHEN LEAH WITT was sworn in last month as United States Attorney for the District of New Hampshire, effective June 1, 2001. The appointment is temporary, with an initial term of 120 days, pending a presidential appointment.
Witt succeeds U.S. Attorney Paul M. Gagnon, whose term expired on May 31. Gagnon served as U.S. Attorney for nearly eight years. Since no presidential appointment has been made, the replacement was named by U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft.
Witt has served as the chief of the Civil Division of the U.S. Attorney’s Office since 1991. As Civil Chief, she engaged in, and supervised, the civil litigation brought by, or against, the United States, federal agencies and federal officials.
Witt has been an assistant U.S. Attorney in New Hampshire since 1986, and previously worked in the Torts Branch of the U.S. Department of Justice’s Civil Division, where she was co-counsel for the United States in In re "Agent Orange" Products Liability Litigation.
Witt is a member of the New Hampshire and Washington, D.C., bars. She currently is a governor-at-large of the New Hampshire Bar Association.
