Gov. Lynch, Justice Broderick Unveil Initiatives
At the honors and awards luncheon at the Feb. 18, 2005, Midyear Meeting, Gov. John Lynch announced that he will establish a commission to select judicial nominees. "Choosing judges should not be the decision of one man," he said. "Their place in our culture is too important for that."
NH Supreme Court Chief Justice John T. Broderick, Jr., explained why he is creating a group to study the status of the legal profession to be chaired by retired Supreme Court Justice William Batchelder and Pierce Law Dean John Hutson. (See Feb. 18 Bar News.) Broderick said the legal profession appears to be changing rapidly. "Law as a business is in the ascendancy and is ever more at risk as a profession and a calling."
"We must correct what we can and envision the future; the legal landscape will change even more before the end of the decade," he said. "Our obligation is to channel those changes."
NHBA President Jim Gleason presented the Bunnell award to David King, of Colebrook; the Ross Pro Bono award to Alethea Froburg, of Berlin; and recognized this year's Pro Bono Attorney of the Year winners.
The Midyear Meeting provided special recognition to members of the Bar (and one Bar staff member) serving on active duty in the military.
