Midyear Meeting 2005: Military Members Celebrated at Midyear Meeting
The 2005 NHBA Midyear Meeting provided special recognition to members of the Bar (and one Bar staff member) serving on active duty in the military. Each member of the military or reservist or Guard member activated since 9/11/01 was presented with the Bar's Distinguished Service to the Public award by NHBA President Jim Gleason.
Gleason presented two previously announced awards: the Vickie M. Bunnell Award for Community Service to David D. King, of Colebrook; and the L. Jonathan Ross Award for Outstanding Commitment to Legal Services for the Poor to Alethea L. Froburg, of Berlin. Gleason also announced the recipients of the County Pro Bono Attorney of the Year awards, which were previously recognized at the Professionalism Day events on Feb. 11.
Gleason also paused to recognize US District Court Judge Paul J. Barbadoro for his seven-year term as Chief Justice of the US District Court, which concluded in October 2004. The Hon. Steven J. McAuliffe now is serving as Chief Judge.
Gen. Kenneth R. Clark, Adjutant General, NH National Guard and Pam Coughlin, chair of the NH House of Representatives' Veteran's Affairs Committee, made remarks on behalf of the recipients of the Distinguished Service to the Public award. A Bar member representing each military branch was asked to read the names of Bar members in each service. Attorney James Steiner honored the Army Reserves; the Navy was honored by US Bankruptcy Court Judge Michael Deasy, the Air Force by Superior Court Associate Justice Carol Ann Conboy, the Marine Corps by Concord District Court Judge Gerard Boyle, and the Coast Guard by attorney Robert Ellard, of the NH Dept. of Safety, Bureau of Hearings.
Maj. John Coughlin, who late last year was appointed as Justice of the Derry District Court, was a last-minute addition to the Midyear luncheon guest list. His unit returned from Iraq the week before the Midyear Meeting. Also attending the luncheon was Col. Gary Lambert and Lt. Col. Tim Bailey, both of the US Marine Corps Reserve, and NH Bar News Managing Editor Anita Becker, of the US Army Reserve, who is on active duty at Ft. Drum, NY. Family members of several Bar members also were on hand. (The day after the Midyear Meeting, the Union Leader published a page one photo of Staff. Sgt. William Whitten, of the NH Army National Guard, and a Lebanon lawyer, being greeted upon his arrival at McGuire Air Force Base, in NJ.)
The meeting also included an award presented to NHBA Communications Director and Bar News Editor Dan Wise by the National Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), recognizing his contribution as a "Patriotic Employer." Adjutant General Kenneth R. Clark, Lt. Col. Anita Becker, Bar News Managing Editor and a US Army reservist activated last fall, and James Goss, executive director of the NH ESGR, presented the award.
NH Attorney General Kelly Ayotte was the main speaker at the NHBA Gender Equality Breakfast. She is flanked by NHBA President James Gleason and Gender Equality Committee Chair Cathy Shanelaris.
