In Memoriam: David E. Lieberman, John M. Keefe

DAVID E. LIEBERMAN

David E. Lieberman, 56, of Nashua, formerly of Milton, Mass., died unexpectedly at Southern New Hampshire Medical Center on Thursday, April 21st.

Born in Boston on April 7, 1949, Attorney Lieberman was a Magna Cum Laude graduate of George Washington University; he earned his law degree at Boston College School of Law. In 1974 he joined the NH Bar and through the years, served on several Bar committees; he also sat as a Special Master on Civil Matters and served on the Domestic Law Committee.

A solo practitioner in Nashua for over 30 years, Lieberman was a past president of the Nashua Bar Association. In his private life, he enjoyed working around his home-and he was an avid Red Sox and New England Patriots fan.

"David was a gentleman. This included treating my support staff with respect; they enjoyed his calls," said colleague Honey Hastings. "He was the senior member and a regular attendee of the Nashua Divorce Lunch. The group will not be the same without his questions and his wit.

"About once a month he would call me (or I would call him) about a challenging case. I will miss these discussions of the law, our clients and our colleagues.

Said Margaret Hall, an attorney in Milford: "I agree wholeheartedly. David welcomed me to Nashua over 20 years ago and has been a wonderful colleague ever since, serious in his work, concerned about his clients and wildly funny in person. I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family."

Attorney Lieberman is survived by his wife Denise (Fitzpatrick) Lieberman and his daughter, Stephanie Liebermam-Burniece of California; a sister, Helene Kinsey of Beaufort, NC and a nephew, Michael Vindici of Phoenix, AZ.

The family has asked those planning an expression of sympathy to consider contributing to the American Heart Association, 20 Merrimack Street, Suite 1, Manchester, NH

JOHN M. KEEFE

John Miles Keefe, 83, died Wednesday, April 20, 2005, at Rivermead Retirement Community in Peterborough, from a series of strokes that began Christmas Eve.

Attorney Keefe was born Oct. 29, 1921, in Clinton, Iowa, the son of William and Annabelle (Carroll) Keefe. He graduated from Bronxville High School in New York and Dartmouth College, class of 1943, as a senior fellow and member of Phi Beta Kappa.

During World War II, Keefe served as a destroyer officer and participated in the invasions of Normandy and Southern France.

In 1948, he graduated from Yale Law School and joined the firm of Sullivan and Cromwell in New York. He later served as vice president of Textile Banking Co. before joining J.P. McGuire & Co. In 1968, he and his wife, Ann, moved from Rye, N.Y., to New Hampshire, where he served as secretary and corporate counsel of Sanders Associates. In 1978, he opened a law firm in Wilton that later became Keefe & Keefe PA when he was joined in practice by his son, William J. Keefe.

John Keefe and his wife moved from their home in Lyndeborough Center to Rivermead in 2002.

His community activities included service as a trustee and treasurer of Monadnock Music; he also served on the New Hampshire Transportation Authority and on the Wilton-Lyndeborough Cooperative School Board. He was an avid hiker, skier and sailor.

Besides his wife of 52 years, survivors include two sons, William J. of Wilton and Miles of Brattleboro, Vt.; and two daughters, Alice of Stevens Point, Wis., and Jane Farrell of Wilton.

In memory of our colleagues, John M. Keefe and David E. Lieberman, the New Hampshire Bar Association's Board of Governors has contributed to the New Hampshire Bar Foundation, 112 Pleasant Street, Concord, NH 03301.
