Attorney Holland Top NH Finisher in Boston Marathon
Derek S. Holland, an attorney with Sulloway & Hollis, and a member of the NH Bar since 2003, finished first among the 333 NH entrants in the 109th Boston Marathon, with a time of 2:37:23. This was Holland's first Boston Marathon, although he was no stranger to Boston, having graduated from Boston College School of Law.
"Running the Marathon was an amazing experience," said Holland. "But it wasn't nearly as much fun to run by Boston College as I thought it would be, because by then the heat and the hills had taken their toll." The temperature was about 70 degrees-"great for the spectators having their barbecues, but not so great for runners!" laughed Holland. "About 50 degrees and cloudy would have been better!"
Timothy Gudas, also from Sulloway and Hollis, said this was his first time for the Boston Marathon, although he has run three other marathons. He, too, mentioned the heat and the hills, but is not discouraged and will try again next year.
Six other attorneys from New Hampshire also participated. Peter McDonough, from the NH Department of Safety, ran his 21st Marathon this year. "It's a great feeling just to finish!" he said. He and John McKinnon of Samaha & Russell PA in Littleton reached the line just one minute apart.
McKinnon runs for the American Liver Foundation and the marathon group he ran with raised over $1 million this year. McKinnon himself has brought in over $20,000 in the eight marathons he has run for the Foundation. "I'm looking forward to next year," he said.
Two female attorneys completed the race; they were Beth Kissinger of Hopkinton, presently on inactive status, and Karen Frazier, with the Department of Health & Human Services. Frazier has run about 26 or 27 marathons, and this was her fifth Boston Marathon. "Most smaller marathons attract maybe 2-3,000 people, but the Boston race is much more exciting. The spectacle of the event itself is impressive-and then the number of spectators-and they're all so wonderful-very supportive all along the way."
