National Guard Salutes Bar Members
The scale of the current mobilization of the New Hampshire Army National Guard in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom is historic. Our state has not seen such a massive call to active duty of our citizen soldiers since World War II. The legal demands placed upon our soldiers and families in preparing for the challenges of a long-term deployment are considerable.
I wish to express my deep gratitude for the recent efforts of the Pro Bono volunteers from the New Hampshire Bar Association for their assistance with the pre-mobilization legal requirements of HQ 197th Field Artillery Brigade at the Manchester Armory on Dec. 13, 2003.
Taking time away from competing family and business needs during perhaps the busiest time of the year, attorneys Susan Hassan, Deborah J. Cooper, Shawn McCarthy and Rose Costello; paralegal Brenda Beer; and the Pro Bono staff of Pam Dodge, Carolann Wooding, Cindee Carter, Heather Logan, Cassie Wooding and Robin Brown spent the greater part of a Saturday counseling soldiers and preparing and witnessing wills, powers of attorney, and guardianship nominations in meeting the needs of over 100 soldiers.
Answering a request for assistance on extremely short notice, the efforts of the Pro Bono volunteers smoothed the legal preparation process immeasurably. The soldiers assisted by their efforts believed that the civilian community cared about their welfare. In giving of their time, perhaps the most precious asset for busy professionals, the Pro Bono volunteers demonstrated a level of caring and commitment that reflects glowingly on the New Hampshire legal community.
I would also like to express our appreciation to Hillsboro attorney Leigh Bosse for his generous contribution of time and resources in providing legal assistance to members of the 744th Transportation Company prior to their Dec. 12th mobilization.
Thank you all for your time and concern for our soldiers and their families.

Editor's Note: On Jan. 10-11, an even larger National Guard mobilization resulted in a two-day military legal clinic at the Concord armory of the NH National Guard. See page 7 for a list of volunteers who helped prepare or update wills, powers of attorney and other legal documents for nearly 100 soldiers who are being activated and deployed overseas later this month. According to Col. Peter Duffy, who heads the Judge Advocate General Corps for the NH National Guard, another deployment may be in the works sometime this year. The NHBA Pro Bono Program is prepared to assist in recruiting volunteers for these sessions and appreciates the short-notice response of Bar members who have so freely given of their time and talents. Hollman Equality Award Nominees Sought
Please take a moment to submit your nomination for the Philip S. Hollman Equality Award. The Committee on Gender Equality established this award on Judge Hollman's retirement from the Superior Court bench in 2003. The award is designed to honor the work of Judge Hollman, a committed advocate for social change.
In the spirit of Judge Hollman's work for gender equality in the legal system (he was an original member of the Task Force on Women in the Bar in 1988 and has been a member of the Committee since that time), the Philip S. Hollman Award will be awarded annually to an individual who has demonstrated a commitment towards promoting respect and fair treatment of all members of the judicial system. The recipient of this award should also demonstrate a dedication to gender equality and/or educating others about gender equality issues.
Please take a few minutes to nominate an outstanding individual who you believe deserves recognition. The nominee can be a member of the Bar, employee of a law firm, New Hampshire court employee, or an employee of a state department or agency that is part of the legal system. Nominations for the award should be forwarded to Cindee Carter at the NH Bar Association, (603) 224-6942 or ccarter@nhbar.org by Jan. 31, 2004. Your nomination should include a brief description of the nominee's qualifications for the award.
The Committee on Gender Equality will review the nominations and select the recipient, who will be presented with the award at the Midyear Meeting's Gender Equality Breakfast on Friday, Feb. 13, 2004. We hope that you will be able to join us during the presentation of this award, and also to welcome the Honorable Marilyn Skoglund, associate justice of the Vermont Supreme Court, as this year's guest speaker.
