Professionalism Dialogue With Judges; Mike Hall to Receive Ross Award

Midyear Meeting Highlights

A PANEL OF JUDGES and attorneys has been added to the Professionalism Committee CLE program "Raising the Bar Through Professionalism" to be presented at the NHBA Midyear Meeting on Friday, Feb. 13. During the two-hour program, several topics will be covered: the role judges can play in upholding professionalism in the courtroom; "truth in negotiations;" and opportunities to enhance professionalism in day-to-day practice, including the provision of pro bono service.

Joining the main faculty of U.S. District Court Judge Steven McAuliffe, NH Supreme Court Justice Linda Dalianis and program chair Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph N. Laplante for the segment on judicial roles will be a "reactor panel" composed of retired Superior Court Chief Justice Walter L. Murphy, Superior Court Marital Master Alice S. Love, Merrimack District Court Judge Clifford R. Kinghorn and attorneys Cathy J. Green, Jeffrey B. Osburn, and William E. Brennan. As in the tradition of past Professionalism Day programs, the emphasis will be on encouraging dialogue among practitioners of all stripes.

At the Midyear Meeting luncheon, the NHBA will present the annual L. Jonathan Ross Award for Outstanding Commitment to Legal Services for the Poor to Michael P. Hall of Manchester. Hall, as a member of the NHBA Citizens Rights Committee, helped organize the Pro Bono Referral Program in the mid-1970s, shortly after he was admitted to the Bar. (The establishment of the Bar's Pro Bono Program, including Hall's role, are described in the most recent issue of New Hampshire Bar Journal.)

The morning CLE calendar also includes a one-hour program on "The New Attorney Discipline System," and the two-hour Professionalism Day program. Following lunch, the CLE offering will be a two-hour program, "The NH Constitution - Constitutional Analysis 20 Years After State v. Ball," featuring Supreme Court Associate Justice James E. Duggan, former Justice Charles G. Douglas, and constitutional authorities Richard Hesse, of Franklin Pierce Law Center, and Robert F. Williams, of Rutgers School of Law in Camden, NJ. Williams is a nationally recognized authority on state constitutions. The faculty, chaired by Mark Larsen of NH Public Defender, also includes attorneys Martin P. Honigberg and Susan Marshall.

Social events at the meeting include a special dinner honoring the career of recently retired Supreme Court Chief Justice David A. Brock. (See page 8 for comments from Justice Brock on the eve of his retirement.) Preceding the dinner will be the NH Bar Foundation Fellows Reception, where W. John Funk of Concord will be feted as an Honorary Fellow. For early-birds, the day begins with the Gender Equality Breakfast, featuring Vermont Supreme Court Justice Marilyn Skoglund as guest speaker and the presentation of the first Philip S. Hollman Equality Award. Also on the morning schedule is a gathering of past presidents of the NH Bar and the International Society of Barristers' annual breakfast. (See Schedule at a Glance for details.)

Occurring on Thursday or Friday evenings, alumni of several law schools will gather for special dinners at the Wayfarer Inn or other restaurants nearby. Graduates of the University of Michigan Law School - Chief Justice Brock's alma mater-will have a special table at the Brock retirement dinner.
