Marguerite Wageling Appointed Hillsboro County Attorney
MARGUERITE WAGELING, who most recently worked as an assistant attorney general, has been appointed Hillsborough County Attorney by the county’s legislative delegation. Wageling will serve the remainder of the term of former County Attorney John Coughlin, a National Guardsman who was called into active duty in December and had to resign his county attorney post in January, just 10 months after he took office.
Prior to being selected for the post, Wageling served as head of the prosecution unit of the Anti-Trust and Consumer Division in the AG’s Office, handling investigations of licensed professionals.
Wageling previously worked for the Hillsborough County attorney’s office for 15 years, from 1985-2000, prosecuting arsons, negligent homicides, rapes and other cases. She also spent a year working for the Rockingham County attorney’s office.
Wageling is a lifelong Manchester resident who graduated from Manchester West High School and Trinity College. She earned her law degree from Franklin Pierce Law Center in 1984 and was admitted to the NH Bar the same year.
The Hillsborough County attorney is responsible for the operation of four offices, overseeing 21 assistant county attorneys, five victim advocates and 15 administrative staff. The office has an annual budget of about $3 million.
In a Union Leader interview, Wageling said that she plans to serve as a mentor to the younger staff and as a hands-on administrator, and will spend time in the courtroom watching attorneys and providing guidance. She said that as county attorney, her focus will be on "the future and bringing a team spirit to this office, as well as an ever-higher level of integrity and professionalism."
