In Memoriam ~ Taylor

Judge Alvin E. Taylor

FORMER PORTSMOUTH DISTRICT Court Judge Alvin E. Taylor died Jan. 15, 2004, in Portsmouth after a brief illness. He was 70.

Taylor was born March 7, 1933, the son of Charles and Helen Taylor. He graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1951 and from Clark University in 1955.

He earned his law degree from Duke University School of Law in 1958 and was admitted to the NH Bar the same year.

Taylor began practicing law with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation in Washington, D.C., in 1958. In 1960, he returned to New Hampshire and joined a Portsmouth law firm that became Griffin, Harrington, Brigham and Taylor. He began a solo practice in 1970 and shortly after joined with Douglas Gray to form the firm Taylor & Gray. He practiced with the firm and its successors, most recently know as Taylor & Keane, until his death.

Taylor served as Rockingham County Attorney in the mid-‘60s. He served as a Portsmouth District Court judge, first as a special justice and then as a justice, from 1970 to March 2003.

He was president of the Portsmouth and Rockingham County bar associations, a member of the NHBA Board of Governors, a member of the board of directors of the Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce, and a member of the Portsmouth Community Foundation.

Taylor was a longtime member of North Congregational Church of Portsmouth and of the Portsmouth Yacht Club.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Janet O’Connor Taylor; a son, David F. Taylor of Mercer Island, Wash.; a daughter, Leslie Taylor Kirby of Darien, Conn.; seven grandchildren; a sister, Pauline Pierce of Hillsboro; and a brother, Charles Taylor of Dallas, Ga.

Memorial donations may be made to the Angelman Syndrome Foundation, 414 Plaza Drive, Suite 209, Westmont, IL 60559, or to the Market Square Building Fund (North Church), 355 Spinney Rd., Portsmouth, NH 03801.
