Fugitive Ex-Attorney Ray Clement Caught in Southern Italy
RAYMOND CLEMENT, a former Groveton attorney convicted of theft who violated has parole in 1996, was captured by U.S. marshals from New Hampshire on Jan. 4 in Mendocino, Italy. When the extradition process is completed, Clement will be returned to the U.S. and may face serving a deferred sentence, as well as the remaining years of his original six-year sentence. The flight from his parole could bring a separate charge.
Clement was originally convicted for the theft of more than $120,000 from several clients.
After his indictment in 1992, Clement fled to Phoenix, Ariz., where he sold televisions as a telemarketer. U.S. marshals found him and returned him to New Hampshire in 1993, and in 1994 he was sentenced to six years for theft. He served three years of his sentence and was released on parole in 1996. The remainder of the sentence was deferred; Clement was ordered to pay back the stolen funds ($134,327) with bi-weekly payments of $20. He paid $70 and then disappeared.
Actually, anyone typing "Raymond Clement" into a search engine could have found him; he was listed with a Web-based company called WritersNet, under "Writers-Published." Clement claimed to be retired from law practice, "enjoying myself…viewing archaeological sites and writing." He said he had written "two novels and about 20 short stories," but hadn’t been "that aggressive in a marketing effort." He concluded, "I should like to get some thing published, mostly to salve my ego."
Clement did not resist arrest and U.S. Marshal Stephen Monier said that he does not anticipate any difficulty with the Italian authorities concerning the extradition.
