In Memoriam
Frederick H. Condon
Frederick Hughes Condon, 71, of East Andover and Fort Myers, Fla., died Thursday, July 7, 2005, in Raleigh, N.C. where he had moved to be with his children. He was admitted to the NH Bar in 1958 and had retired after many years in executive positions at the Concord-based Jefferson Pilot Financial Corp.
Born Aug. 7, 1934, in Connecticut, he was the son of the late Frederick A. and Mary H. Condon. He graduated from Notre Dame High School in West Haven, Conn., in 1951 and he earned his undergraduate degree from Yale University in 1955. In 1958, he received his Juris Doctorate from Harvard Law School, where he and consumer advocate and presidential candidate Ralph Nader were classmates and friends. They worked together on the school newspaper.
In 1961 Condon was injured in a crash near Concord that left him a paraplegic. Nader, who had started researching auto safety as a student, was greatly affected by the accident, and it became the inspiration for his campaign for safer cars. Nader dedicated his book Unsafe at Any Speed to Condon.
Condon worked for Chubb Life America and later Jefferson Pilot Financial Insurance Co., retiring in 1998 from his position as general counselor and senior vice president. In the years following the accident, he was determined not to let his wheelchair change his life any more than it had to, and made it up the stairs to work every morning despite there being no wheelchair ramps or other handicapped accessible features. The company’s janitor would carry his chair up the stairs for him, according to an article in the Concord Monitor.
Condon enjoyed sailing on Lake Winnipesaukee with his wife and four children. His children would usually lift him into the boat and leave the wheelchair behind. Condon memorized the location of each navigational marker so that he could guide the boat himself from the helm. Condon also loved to hunt and fish.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Marcia (Harper) Condon; a son, Stephen M. Condon of Auburn Hill, Mich.; his twin daughters, Laura A. Condon of Bedford and Cynthia L. Condon of Signal Mountain, Tenn.; a daughter, Lesley S. Daley of Raleigh, N.C.; a sister, Suzanne O’Connell of New York; a brother, Michael A. Condon of Connecticut; and seven grandchildren, Lindsey and Brian Benedict, Michael and Sean Condon, Danielle Bowne, and Alanna and Victoria Daley. His brother, John T. “Jack” Condon, predeceased him.
A memorial service will be held this summer in New Hampshire, which Condon considered his home.
Memorial donations may be made to the Yale University, Alumni Fund, 265 Church St., New Haven, Conn. 06510; or to the school, college or scholarship of one’s choice.
