L. Jonathan Ross Appointed Chair of ABA Pro Bono and Public Service Committee

L. Jonathan Ross of Wiggin & Nourie in Manchester has been appointed by President-Elect Michael Greco of the American Bar Association as Chair of the ABA Standing Committee on Pro Bono and Public Service.

The Standing Committee on Pro Bono and Public Service is responsible for reviewing, evaluating and fostering development of pro bono publico programs and activities by law firms, bar associations, corporate law departments, law schools, and other legal practitioners.  The committee strives to establish an interest in pro bono publico programs and defines the appropriate scope, function, and objectives of such programs.  In addition, Ross will lead the committee in proposing and reviewing legislation and policy that impacts upon the ability of lawyers to provide pro bono publico service.

Throughout his nearly 38 years of practicing family law, Ross has held numerous leadership positions with the New Hampshire, New England and American Bar Associations, serving as President of the NHBA and the NEBA.  He is the NHBA delegate to the ABA’s House of Delegates, a former member of the ABA Board of Governors, a former member and Chair of the Standing Committee on Legal Aid and Indigent Defendants, and a current member of the Standing Committee on Pro Bono and Public Responsibility.

Much of Ross’s career has been devoted to assuring that those of low income have access to the legal system.  In 1986, he was one of three founders of “Bar Leaders for the Preservation of Legal Services for the Poor.”  This group advocated for The Legal Services Corporation during a time when the federal administration sought to reduce or eliminate funding the corporation.  At Wiggin & Nourie, Ross chairs the pro bono program.

Ross Named to Search Panel

It was also recently announced that Ross has been named by ABA President Greco as one of a nine-member Executive Director Search Committee to help find a successor to Robert A. Stein, current Executive Director and COO of the American Bar Association.  Stein will retire next August after 12 years of service.

The American Bar Association is the largest voluntary professional services organization in the world comprised of more than 405,000 members.  The mission of the American Bar Association is to be the national representative of the legal profession, serving the public and the profession by promoting justice, professional excellence and respect for the law.

Reporting to the Board of Governors, the Executive Director is responsible for the overall operation of the American Bar Association throughout the United States, Asia, Africa, and the Eastern Europe.  With a staff of more than 800, the Executive Director overseas all initiatives of the ABA including the enhancement of technology, law school accreditation, requirements for continuing education programs for attorneys and judges, government affairs, long-range planning, and an annual budget of more than $80 million.

In his role as a search committee Member, Ross will contribute to the creation of a position description and application, seek and classify applications, conduct interviews, and along with the entire committee, ABA president, president-elect, and ex-officio members, nominate a successor for vote by the House of Delegates of the American Bar Association.
