NH Women’s Bar Association - Mary-Pilkington Casey Named Ricker Honoree

The NH Women’s Bar Association will honor Franklin Pierce Law Center professor Mary Pilkington-Casey next month. The NHWBA will present Casey with the Marilla Ricker Award, recognizing her service on behalf of women and clients at the FPLC’s Family and Housing Clinic.

The presentation takes place at the NHWBA’s fall reception at the Common Man Restaurant in Concord on Oct. 6, 2005, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

The award is named in honor of Marilla Marks Ricker, who in 1890 won the landmark NH Supreme Court case allowing women to petition to practice law in this state, although Ricker herself never petitioned and was never admitted to the NH Bar.   She did, however, pave the way to success for other women lawyers, advancing opportunities for women in the legal profession.

Work-Life Balance Initiative

This year, the NHWBA is planning several seminars on finding a balance between work and the rest of one’s life.  Dr. Ellen Ostrow, a nationally known work-life balance expert and Betsy Black, a local work-life coach (both of whom are former attorneys) will lead workshops and coaching sessions for the NHWBA throughout the coming months.

The first work-life balance event will take place on Oct. 26 at Wiggin & Nourie in Manchester.  Dr. Ostrow, a member of the ABA Commission on Women in the Profession, will speak on  “Strategically Planning Your Career to Achieve Work-Life Balance.” A reception follows, giving members the opportunity to become acquainted with the speaker.

Dr. Ostrow publishes a newsletter read by many women attorneys and also conducts “virtual coaching sessions.” Six of these sessions will be offered free of charge to NHWBA members; anyone interested in these sessions may join any one of them simply by dialing into a conference call.  In her work with attorneys, Ostrow deals with such subjects as career-building and care-giving, understanding workplace culture, becoming the “go-to” lawyer, effective self-promotion, and stress management—to name only a few.

Beginning in January, Betsy Black will hold a multi-part workshop for members one evening per week for six weeks—and in April the Work Stress Relief Clinic will again be offered; it has traditionally been held at the Common Man Inn and Spa in Plymouth. Black will cover a variety of matters of interest to those engaged in the legal life, such as career aspirations, values and goals, making connections and building/deepening relationships with those within your sphere.

Plans for the coming year outside the range of the initiative include a Developments in Family Law CLE, a law firm technology seminar, and a panel discussion on working part-time as an attorney.

Heather Krans and Joceline Champagne developed this year’s work-life initiative for the Women’s Bar and presented their plan at the National Conference of Women’s Bar Associations in Chicago in August.

The NHWBA was incorporated in May of 1998 by Maureen Raiche Manning, Jennifer L. Parent, Joy V. Riddell, Claudia C. Damon, and Julie Introcaso. Incorporation followed closely on the heels of the Hillsborough County Women’s Bar Association program entitled “Why Have a Statewide Women’s Bar Association in New Hampshire?” Women attorneys throughout New Hampshire were invited to voice their opinions on whether the women’s county bar groups should join to establish a statewide women’s bar association. The consensus was overwhelming and piloted what is now NHWBA.
