Giving Back - Katrina – Notes from Bar Members
From Eileen Evans, Hampton, NH:
I just returned this week from volunteering to work with the Katrina evacuees; my time was cut short due to Hurricane Rita…Wednesday night [Sept. 21]. I had taken down over 300 lbs. of new shirts and sweatshirts donated by the Hampton Chamber of Commerce, beanie babies and other articles of clothing…[for] Northwest Ministries, one of several groups handling relief for the hurricane evacuees. I also spent a day in a warehouse packing boxes with backpacks and school supplies for the children of the evacuees who have been placed in Texas schools. The schools now have all the supplies they need…. Still needed are cash donations…and homes where people can stay until they find new homes for themselves. Texas should be praised for their generosity and organization in handling the evacuees.
From Michael Delaney at the Attorney General’s office:
•Our Civil Bureau advised the Adjutant General’s Office and Gov. Lynch’s office and assisted in drafting orders to facilitate the deployment of National Guard troops to New Orleans and Mississippi, and provided legal counsel to the Governor’s Office in connection with an executive order issued by Gov. Lynch ensuring that state employees who are National Guard troops sent to New Orleans would be compensated during their time of deployment.
• Our Civil Bureau has also provided legal counsel to DHHS to facilitate use of federal disaster aid and federal Medicaid benefits for families that have relocated temporarily to NH..
• Our Consumer Protection/Antitrust Bureau has begun investigating price gouging in the spike of oil prices, and consulted with other states’ attorneys general looking into the matter.
• Our CTU/Consumer Bureau issued consumer alerts via a press release to educate consumers about prudent charitable giving and to warn consumers about scams that have already appeared.
Our staff raised $2500 in one day for the WMUR telethon after the Dept. of Labor issued a challenge to state agencies to top its donation amount.
