Court Team Triumphs in Bench-Bar Softball
A COMBINED TEAM of staff and judges from the Supreme and Superior Courts ("The Supremes" and "Harmless Errors") narrowly defeated a team composed of members of the Board of Governors and Bar Association staff in a softball game on July 31.
The 19-13 score belied the stellar pitching, slick fielding and savvy base-running of the Bar team, which was unable to overcome the overwhelming home-field advantage and talent of the court’s all-star team. (The game was played at Morton Field, off Hazen Drive, within sight of the imposing Supreme Court building.)
The court scored with abandon in the early innings, as its muscular lineup ripped towering hits to right and center field and scorched line drives through the infield. But late in the game, the Bar’s team began to rouse itself, answering with offensive displays in several semi-big innings. However, the Bar’s comeback fell short of overcoming the early lead the worthy court team had built.
At the conclusion of the game, game balls signed by all players and spectators were presented to representatives of both courts by NHBA President (and starting pitcher) Peter Hutchins (0-1).
A rematch for next season was taken under advisement by both sides.
