Supreme Court Travels to Exeter for Nov. 10 “On the Road” Session
The NH Supreme Court continues its “On the Road” program with a special oral argument session on Thursday, Nov. 10, 2005 at Assembly Hall, Academy Building at Phillips Exeter Academy.
The event will have a special significance as Exeter is the alma mater of retiring Justice Joseph P. Nadeau.
Hundreds of students from 13 area high schools have been invited to attend the event, which will include question and answer sessions with attorneys and members of the Supreme Court. Before the session, volunteer lawyers –arranged with the assistance of the NH Bar Association— visit the invited schools to discuss in advance with teachers and students the legal issues involved in the cases that will be heard by the court, and to provide an orientation to the appellate process generally. Information about the scheduled cases is available at the Court’s Web site at www.courts.state.nh.us.
The “on the road” sessions, which the court usually conducts twice each year, provide a unique opportunity for students and community members to see the appellate process up close. In addition to the invited schools, limited public seating is always available at these sessions.
During the session, the justices hear oral arguments in two actual cases now pending before the Supreme Court. The same protocols used at the Supreme Court in Concord during oral argument will be followed during the session. After each argument, lawyers in the cases will take questions from the student audience. Following the court session, the justices will answer questions from the students about the work of the Supreme Court and the judicial branch.
The “On the Road” program was launched in May 2002 at St. Anselm College in Manchester. Since then, sessions have been held at Dartmouth College, Dover High School, Plymouth State University, and Keene State College, and Nashua High School North. These sessions are the only occasion when the Court convenes outside the Supreme Court building in Concord.
Oral argument begins promptly at 9:30 a.m. To attend, allow at least an hour to proceed through security screening.. For information, contact the Court’s public information office at 603 271-2646, ext. 362.
